A Lot of Fun with Dye

Before you can start your quest for creativity, explore around and get inspired. Experiment with different bright colour palettes, be bold and be ready to get yourself messy. To begin, gather everything you need. First, find the item you wish to dye. You can use just about anything – shirts, aprons, handkerchiefs, pillowcases, curtains, socks, sheets, towels, tablecloths, etc. Make sure the textile is at least 60% cotton, hemp or rayon, not polyester – or else the dye will have a hard time sticking to your garment. You may need rubber bands or strings to tie up the item you will be dyeing. The tying is the secret that makes the design your own personal and unique style.

Here is a list of other supplies you will use: dye, rubber gloves, rubber gloves, large pot or bucket, squirt or spray bottles, long-handled utensils, soda ash, salt, plastic/garbage bags, newspaper and paper towels and finally rags and other cleaning materials

Now move and get started! The process is really simple. There are so many different kinds of lessons, techniques and patterns that you can use to make your colorful and bright creations. Tie-dyeing is an activity that every child with old pyjamas goes through. The great thing is that no one item will come out exactly the same. Each creation is unique!

By exposing your child to this fun activity, you open up their imagination and ability to make combinations of colors and designs. All it takes a shirt that needs a new design, some dye, a lot of water and a few tie dye instructions.
